Dubai-based Nakheel, one of the world’s largest privately-held property developers, announced that it has begun construction work on Emirates, the tenth and final precinct in its International City residential district project.

Scheduled to be completed by the third quarter of 2009, Emirates will feature 856 studios and 756 one-bedroom residential units, in addition to 52 commercial units.

Engineer Rashid Al-Helli, Director of International City, said the Emirates will be based on traditional regional architecture. Currently, the internationally-themed communities include China, England, France, Greece, Italy, Morocco, Persia and Russia.

International City was designed as an integrated multi-purpose development to cater to the increasing demand for affordable housing in Dubai. Nakheel forecasted that the residential project will be home to over 70,000 people by the end of 2008.
