"This has been achieved in just 21 months of operations. du is presenting this landmark accomplishment to the honourable leadership of the UAE and its residents," said a statement.
This achievement comes shortly after the declaration of the company's first-ever net profit since its inception. du announced a net profit of Dh31 million during the third quarter of 2008, a year before the stated objective in its financial plan.
Osman Sultan, CEO of du said: "The customer base accomplishment comes while we celebrate an occasion dear to our hearts which is the 37th National Day in the UAE. We are honoured to present this accomplishment to the leadership of the UAE and its residents, to make it part of the overall accomplishments of the UAE."
He added: "With this historical step in the path that du is taking, we have come closer to achieving our previously announced goal of having a 30 per cent market share in the country and this definitely exceeds our goal and market expectations.
Du is the official communication sponsor for the 37th National Day celebrations and launched two special songs that will be presented to the country and residents.
During celebrations for the National Day, du designed a special logo which carries the UAE flag colours and is sponsoring the celebrations in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the western region.
Du, the integrated telecom service provider in the UAE, launched mobile telecommunication services on 11 February 2007 across the UAE in addition to internet and pay TV services in some of the free zones of Dubai. Call Select, the first of du's nationwide Fixed line services for voice telephony, was launched in July 2007.
Du is 40 per cent owned by the UAE Federal Government, 20 percent by Mubadala Development Company, 20 per cent by Emirates Communications and Technology Company and 20 percent by public shareholders.
It is listed on the Dubai Financial Market (DFM) and trades under the name du.
One region one rate
Du has simplified roaming charges by introducing a unified set of attractive roaming rates for the first time in the UAE. "Thanks to the 'One Region One Rate' roaming scheme, all du mobile subscribers can enjoy calling local numbers and receiving calls at just Dh1.25 per minute, while roaming in the GCC region," said a statement.
The unified rates come into effect immediately without any extra charges and will be available by default to all du customers while they roam in the GCC region, the statement said.
Du mobile customers can choose any telecom operator during roaming in the GCC while still benefitting from this attractive scheme.
