Students from four schools will pit their wits against each other today in the grand final of the Etisalat Interschool Brain Hunt, a televised quiz competition for Indian schools in the UAE.

The finalists are Abu Dhabi Shuroor Academy, Al Ain Juniors, Sharjah Indian School and Our Own English School Sharjah. Students will answer questions on a variety of topics ranging from religion to current affairs. The winning team will receive a cash prize of Rs100,000 (Dh8,063), gold medals and other awards.

"We have reached the grand final after a series of rounds in which two-student teams from 54 leading Indian schools in the UAE have participated," said quizmaster Kannu Baker, chief executive officer of competition organiser Vision Tomorrow.

"When we started the quiz competition in 2003 only 13 teams took part. Now we intend to take this competition to Indian schools in Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait. About 150,000 Indian school students and their families watch the contest live on the Kairali TV channel."

The final will be held at the Indian Association Hall in Sharjah. Telecom operator Etisalat and other leading business groups including LuLu Hypermarkets, UAE Exchange and Wisdom Educational Institution are associated with the programme.

"Parents are keen that their children should participate in such programmes," said Baker.

"We distributed 150,000 leaflets among Indian school students in the UAE and there have been entries from all the emirates. We also publish quiz books that are distributed free among school students."

The questions posed cover facts and figures, people and faith, current affairs and other topics.
