Officials and experts from the UAE and other countries will gather in Abu Dhabi this month for a conference that will focus on offset programmes and the global financial crisis, organisers said yesterday.

The UAE Offset Programme Bureau (OPB) will sponsor the February 18-19 event, which will attract speakers from the UAE and other GCC countries, Egypt, Jordan, India, Pakistan, Turkey, Malaysia, the United States and Britain.

"The expanding role of offset and countertrade operations in global trade will be the focus of the Abu Dhabi International Offset Conference,"OPB said.

It will be hosted by the OPB and organised by the Global Offset and Counter-trade Association and Defence Manufacturers Association of Britain.

The conference will be held under the auspices of General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and Chairman of the OPB.

"We are glad to host this important event, which will bring together officials and experts from different parts of the world to tackle the growing role of offset in boosting global trade," said Saif Mohamed Al Hajeri, Chief Executive Officer of OPB.

"Adioc 2009 will also provide an opportunity to examine prospects for resolving the current economic and financial crisis, based on solutions drawn from offset core principles such as economic diversification, FDIs, technology transfer, fair trade and joint cooperation."

Adioc 2009 is timed to coincide with the International Defence Exhibition & Conference (Idex 2009) to be held from February 22 to 26 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre in Abu Dhabi.
