A former Army captain has been sentenced to four years and two months in federal prison for stealing $400,000 from the US government while stationed at Kandahar Air Base in Afghanistan.

U.S. District Judge Helen Gillmor on Tuesday also ordered David Gilliam to pay about $450,000 in restitution to the government.

The 39-year-old Gilliam had previously pleaded guilty to theft, money laundering and filing a false tax return.

Gilliam was accused of stealing the money between April 2004 and April 2005. At the time he worked as a disbursing officer for the Army’s Alpha Detachment, 125th Finance Battalion, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

Prosecutors say he allegedly smuggled the funds from Afghanistan to Hawaii, where he spent some of the money before relocating to South Carolina.
