Five Americans face life sentences in Pakistan court

Five Americans will appear in an anti-terrorism court in eastern Pakistan, after police have said they will seek life sentences against them for allegedly plotting attacks in the country.

The young Muslim men, who are from the Washington DC area, were captured in the eastern Pakistan city of Sargodha in early December in a case that has spurred fears that Westerners are travelling to Pakistan to join militant groups.

A senior police investigator in Sargodha, Tahir Gujar, said recently that police would be seeking life sentences against them on terrorism charges.

Under Pakistan’s complicated judicial system, police will recommend the charges during the court appearance. However, the court might not charge the men immediately.

The men will appear in court on Monday.
