Magnitude-5.2 quake strikes China, leaving 1 dead, 11 injured

A strong earthquake has jolted south-western China, leaving at least one person dead, 11 others injured and more than a hundred houses damaged or destroyed.

The US Geological Survey says the temblor struck on Sunday at 5:37am local time in the region bordering Sichuan province and the city of Chongqing, registering a magnitude of 5.2.

The agency said the quake was centered 35 kilometres southeast of the city of Suining in Sichuan provinceÕs east, at a depth of 18.6 kilometres.

The Sichuan provincial seismological bureau said the death and injuries occurred in three villages that were badly hit in the town of Moxi, near the epicenter. Moxi is made up of 17 villages with a population of about 30,000 people.
