At least two hikers were killed and several others were still missing Sunday after they were buried by an avalanche in northeastern Turkey, a local official said.
The hikers were part of a group of around 15 walking on Mount Zigana, in Gumushane province when snow crashed down on them, said Mustafa Canli, the mayor of the nearby town of Torul.
Climber Ural Ayar told NTV television by telephone that at least seven of the hikers were pulled out of the snow. There were conflicting reports on the number of people still buried.
Ayar said military and mountain rescue teams had arrived at the scene.
