Vietnam sentences four drug traffickers to death

A court in northern Vietnam has sentenced four men to death for trafficking more than 66 pounds (33 kilograms) of heroin.

Presiding Judge Luong Van Hien says four others were given life sentences on the same charges on Friday at the end of the five-day trial in Thai Nguyen province.

The defendants were convicted of trafficking the heroin between 1996 and late 2007.

Last month, a court in the northern province of Lai Chau sentenced six people to death for trafficking nearly 45 pounds (20 kilograms) of heroin.

About 100 people are executed by firing squad each year in Vietnam, many for committing drug-related offences.
