At least 120 people have been killed in violence since protests erupted across Kenya after President Mwai Kibaki's disputed re-election, the Kenyan Red Cross said on Tuesday.

"The figure we have so far is 120 but we haven't updated to account for overnight," Kenyan Red Cross Secretary-General Abbas Guled told Reuters. He said his organisation counted the deaths from witnesses and mortuaries.

The death toll appeared almost certain to rise as there was further violence overnight. The violence began on Sunday.

Residents in a western city said bodies were lying in the street.

Many of the dead had gunshot wounds, sparking accusations from rights activists and the opposition that Kibaki had turned Kenya - traditionally one of the most stable nations in East Africa - into a "police state". (Reuters)
