An Emirates Airline jet turned around and landed safely in Australia on Thursday after apparently experiencing a problem in-flight, an airport spokesman said.

The nature of the problem was not immediately known.

Emirates flight EK425 carrying 120 passengers from the Western Australia city of Perth to the Middle East city of Dubai returned to Perth and touched down without incident about two hours after takeoff.

Westralia Airports Corp spokesman Malcolm Bradshaw said fire and ambulance crews were mobilised after the airport’s emergency systems were triggered, but he was not aware of the nature of the problem on board.

“The plane informed air traffic control it was returning and the plane landed safely. All passengers and crew are safe,” Bradshaw said.

Officials from Emirates were not immediately available for comment.

Dubai-based Emirates operates two direct flights a week from Perth to Dubai as well as flights to other Australian cities.
