Day two of racing at Cheltenham called off

The second day of the Cheltenham Festival, Britain's premier jump race meeting, had to be called off on Wednesday because of high winds sweeping across the course.

"We have made the decision to abandon racing for today," said Andy Clifton, Cheltenham racecourse communications manager.

"We have a weather forecast for today that is predicting extremely strong winds over the next six or seven hours with a high degree of certainty."

He said the weather forecast for Thursday and Friday, the last two days of the meeting, was much calmer and Wednesday's abandoned races would be rescheduled to run on those days.

The Gold Cup is on Friday when Kauto Star will defend the title he won last year.  (Reuters)
