Insurgents killed at least eight people across Iraq on Friday in separate bomb attacks, including two men who were returning from a game of football south of Baghdad, police said.

A group of men were travelling in a minibus after playing football when a bomb exploded in their vehicle in Al-Hay, a town south of the central Shiite city of Kut, killing two of them, police Lieutenant Mohammed Jasim said.

He said nine others were wounded in the blast.

Another bomb explosion in front of a police station in the town of Suweira, south of Baghdad, killed three people, local police Lieutenant Fadhel Ali said.

Insurgents also exploded a car bomb near an Iraqi army checkpoint in the northern city of Mosul, killing three soldiers, police said.

The bomb went off in an industrial area in western Mosul, said Brigadier General Khalid Abdul Sattar, spokesman for the Nineveh security plan. He said 10 other people, including five Iraqi soldiers, were wounded.

Insurgents have stepped up attacks in Mosul, the third-largest city in Iraq, capital of Nineveh province and stronghold of Al Qaeda militants according to the US military. (AFP)
