French parliament adopts law: state aid to those caring for dying relatives

France’s lower house of parliament has unanimously passed a law granting government payments to those who take time off work to care for dying relatives. French law already allows people to take up to six months off work unpaid to care for a dying relative.

The new law passed Tuesday would allow people who leave work to care for a dying relative to receive €49 a day for up to three weeks from the government.

The law now goes to the Senate for approval. That is likely, given the unusual agreement by lawmakers of left and right in the lower house, the National Assembly.

The law’s authors estimate the bill would affect about 20,000 families a year and cost a total of €20 million.
