M&A among European firms set to pick up pace

Mergers and acquisitions among European retail and consumer-goods companies may pick up pace through 2010 as a greater focus on improving balance sheets gives financial flexibility, Fitch Ratings said.

Most acquisitions "are expected to be of a manageable size," with larger deals "limited to higher-rated entities", it said
