Kenya police say 12 killed in land dispute

Some 12 people were shot, hacked or burned to death in the latest of a series of bloody property disputes to plague the Mount Elgon area near the Kenya-Uganda border, police said on Monday.

"As a result, 12 people were killed... 10 houses were burned to ashes and six people were seriously injured," police spokesman Eric Kiraithe said in a statement.

The Mount Elgon region has been the site of violent feuds over land among sub-clans of the Kalenjin tribe, long preceding the waves of ethnic conflict that struck Kenya after President Mwai Kibaki's election in a disputed December 27 vote. (Reuters)
