Moderate earthquake injures 10 people in remote mountain area in Iran

By Agencies

A moderate earthquake overnight rattled a remote mountain area in Iran and injured 10 people, damaged 70 buildings, the official IRNA news agency reported Thursday.

The report said the quake registered 4.3 on the Richter scale, with an epicenter located in central Iran. Relief teams were dispatched with tents and blankets to the Nasirabad village in the Gandoman district, some 600 kilometres (375 miles) south of the capital, Tehran.

IRNA quoted Sattar Farhadi, head of the local emergency department as saying that the quake struck Nasirabad at 0035 local time (0905 GMT).

Iran is located on seismic fault lines and is prone to earthquakes, experiencing at least one slight quake every day on average. In November, a medium quake injured 20 schoolchildren in southwestern Iran.

In March 2006, three earthquakes and nine aftershocks hit western Iran, in quick succession, killing at least 70 people and injuring about 1,200. (AP)
