Appeals against Falasi acquittal

The Dubai Court of Cassation has admitted two appeals by the Public Prosecution and plaintiff Maisoun Fahmi Jamal against the acquittal of former minister Khalifa Bakhit Al Falasi by the Dubai Appeals Court in a case of fraud and embezzlement.

Taking a decision to look afresh into the case, the court set February 8 as the date of the hearing.

This comes after the issuance of sentences that acquitted Al Falasi and two other people who were accused by the public prosecution of fraud and embezzlement in taking over a company after the death of Al Falasi's partner Hassan Jamal.

Businesswoman Maisoun Fahmi Jamal, Jamal's sister, had filed the original case against Al Falasi in which the Court of First Instance had sentenced him to two years in jail.

Al Falasi appealed against this instance at the Appeals Court, which overturned the verdict and acquitted him.

Two other defendants, Salim Helmi Abdullah, a US national, and BF were also acquitted. The court also ruled that it was not specialised to look into the civil case filed by Maisoun Fahmi.

Commenting on the decision taken by the Court of Cassation, Al Falasi's lawyer, Sameer Jaafar said: "Apparently, the Court of Cassation was not convinced about the decision of the Appeals Court, which acquitted my client. So, it decided to look into the case again."
