The world's tallest tower, which challenged the ingenuity of mankind in its making and pushed the ceiling of the sky by more than 300 metres, was last night inaugurated by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

The dazzling opening ceremony, attended by sheikhs, captains of business and industry and world dignitaries, was a culmination of the celebrations marking the fourth anniversary of the accession of Sheikh Mohammed as Ruler of Dubai.

Sheikh Mohammed said: "We build high summits for people of high endeavour. The UAE today puts a lighted point on the world map. Every summit in the world is associated with someone great. Today I announce the opening of the burj of my brother Khalifa bin Zayed."

The breathtaking opening was watched by thousands and viewed by a live audience estimated at more than two billion people worldwide.
