Another fire broke out in Dubai this morning, just eight days after a devastating explosion in Al Quoz killed at least two people. Abu Nasier, spokesperson of the Dubai Ministry of Civil Defence, confirmed that two paint warehouses, opposite the Home Centre depot near the Juma Al Majid Plant off Road Eight, were gutted by fire. A huge cloud of black smoke could be seen in the area earlier this morning. An Indian warehouse employee was rushed to hospital for injuries including severe burns.
The cause of the fire has not yet been established but those working near the warehouse reported hearing a loud explosion just before the fire broke out, according to local media reports.
The fire broke out at 11.16am and was exacerbated by strong winds. It was extinguished at 1.01pm, Nasier told Emirates Business. “The case is now being investigated by the Dubai Police,” he said.
Nasier added that while the Civil Defence has a department dedicated to the promotion of fire safety, he encourages everyone in the business community to do their share in preventing fire accidents. “This should be a collective effort by both the government and the private sector,” he said. Traffic was disrupted due to the incident. At 3pm, exit 43 from Sheikh Zayed Road into Al Quoz - by Times Square Centre - was still closed.The site of the fire is close to where an illegal fireworks factory exploded last week. Around 83 warehouses were gutted in that incident.
And yesterday, a blaze completely gutted Deira’s Naif Souk, reducing dozens of shops to ashes.
The string of incidents is likely to prompt calls for greater fire precautions, particularly in warehouses used to store hazardous goods.
