Abu Dhabi Police have arrested a man who allegedly conned singers into believing he was an events producer.

The man, DW, 37, had a fake cheque for $3.25 million on him, which he was planning to give to a well-known Arab singer for concerts and recordings. On investigation it was revealed the suspect's event management firm did not exist and he was in the country illegally.

DW has also been charged with defrauding people by promising visit visas to Europe for cash. A number of local artists who had been targeted filed a complaint.

DW was arrested at a pest control office in Abu Dhabi, where he was designing a website for his fictional company. Colonel Hammad Ahmed Al Hammdi, Head of Abu Dhabi Police CID, urged people to be wary of such scams. "Always check people's background before handing over money to anyone promising you huge returns," he said.
