Residents of several pockets in the Sharjah Industrial Area spent several hours without power on Monday.

Power failed in many  areas around 9am. While the supply was subsequently restored in a few areas, many remained in the dark till late night.

Angry residents told Emirates Business that they have been literally sweating it out.

Shopkeepers said they incurred losses as perishables meant to be refrigerated got spoiled.

Badsha Zada, an employee of a travel and tourism company offering Umrah and Hajj packages said eight of his employees could only sit idle with no business possible as all bookings are done through internet.

His work having suffered when power failed on Sunday, Zada was planning to make up for lost time on Monday.

"I live across the road and there was no power there too," he said.

Being in the peak season for bookings, Zada expects heavy backlogs.

Suresh Babu, manager of a printing press in the area said he was using a power generator that needs 25 litres of diesel a day.

Fifteen of his workers are forced to sit idle during the blackouts.

A local barber, Azar had to down the shutters."Without power we cannot do any work,” he added.

Most of the industrial units in the area remained closed and those with power back-up scaled down production.

A resident of Sharjah Industrial Area 10, Krishna Kumar lamented that his workplace and home were affected.
