A slew of arts and crafts events mark International?Mother Language Day today, with the Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation (ADMAF) rolling out a programme in the capital. Unesco marks February 21 as International Mother Language Day to promote linguistic and cultural diversity.

In a celebration of Arabic language, an original play by Pauline Haddad called 1001 Stories will be performed in literal Arabic. Created specifically for the International Mother Language Day celebrations, the play and workshop will be performed at the Sheikh Zayed Private Girls Academy.

Also, workshops will run throughout the week at various educational establishments run by Art Sawa, introducing students to the basics of calligraphy. And in association with NYUAD, Salwa Mikdadi of The Emirates Foundation will give a lecture on Visual Reflections on Arabic Poetry.

"The Mother Language Day gives an opportunity to celebrate our mother Arabic language," said Hoda Al Khamis Kanoo, Founder of Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation.
