Philippine President Gloria Arroyo cancelled a trip to the country's northern provinces due to reports of a plot to assassinate her, the chief of her security force said Thursday.
Brigadier General Romeo Prestoza said the plot was being hatched by "extremists Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) and the Abu Sayyaf Group,".
"It is not just the president, there are other targets," he said, adding the plot was not related to an opposition rally planned for Friday to call for Arroyo's ouster.
Arroyo had been scheduled to visit the northern Philippines on Friday. (AFP)
