Iranian classical singer Shahram Nazeri, dubbed “Iran’s Pavarotti”, has been released after being held overnight for questioning by authorities in Tehran.

Nazeri turned himself Thursday, a source close to the family said, requesting anonymity out of safety concerns. Nazeri’s detention and release Friday were confirmed by Hadi Ghaemi, director of the New York-based International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran.

The singer had been briefly detained at Imam Khomeini Airport in Tehran when he returned to Iran on January 4 from a New Year’s holiday in Dubai. The source said his passport and identification documents were seized then.

A hugely popular classical musician in Iran for more than 30 years, Nazeri said in October that he has never faced censorship in Iran, “a rarity for any artist”.
