Saudi Arabia’s interior ministry says a Saudi man was beheaded Sunday after being convicted of fatally shooting another man during a dispute.

The statement says Eid Bin Hajhouj Bin Ersan was executed after his murder conviction in the northern city of Arar. It did not elaborate.

Saudi Arabia follows a strict interpretation of Islam under which people convicted of murder, drug trafficking, rape and armed robbery can be executed, usually with a sword.

Sunday’s beheading brings to 53 the number of people executed in the kingdom so far this year, according to an Associated Press count. Saudi Arabia beheaded 137 people last year, up sharply from the 38 executed in 2006.
