Talks to pledge support for Yemen in fight against Al Qaeda

World powers will use talks Wednesday to offer pledges to bolster Yemen’s faltering economy and strengthen attempts to tackle a rising threat from Al-Qaeda in wake of the failed Christmas Day airliner attack in the United States.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and delegates from the Middle East, Russia and Europe will join a hurriedly convened meeting in London to address concern over the risk posed by Yemen following the botched Detroit bombing.

Officials said about 20 nations joining the talks with Yemeni representatives will launch a new international organization to help the country carry out political and economic reforms.

The Washington Post reported late on Tuesday that US military teams and intelligence agencies are deeply involved in secret joint operations with Yemeni troops.
