A roadside bomb apparently planted to hit an Iraqi police patrol missed its target and killed one civilian instead on Monday in eastern Baghdad, police said.

Four others were wounded in the blast, which hit the mostly Shiite Mashtal area during the morning rush hour, police said.

Most of the victims were in a civilian car driving behind a police convoy, they said.

Across town, another bomb went off early on Monday at an Iraqi Army checkpoint near a children’s amusement park, police said. No one was hurt.

Police later arrested a man who was spotted leaving the bomb, disguised in a plastic bag, near the checkpoint opposite the Al Zawraa amusement park in western Baghdad, they said.

Meanwhile in northern Iraq, a bomb exploded on a gas pipeline near Tikrit at dawn, police said. The blast ignited a fire but caused minimal damage to the pipeline, they said. Still, authorities said they halted the flow of gas temporarily, in order to put out the fire and repair damage. The stoppage was expected to last one or two days, they said.
