A Dh84 million plan to expand greenery in Dubai and “beautify” Sheikh Zayed Road is being drawn up by Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

The scheme, due to start in May, is intended to improve the appearance of urban areas and create a more attractive and safer environment for pedestrians.

“The initial stage of the Sheikh Zayed Road Beautification Project will cover residential areas extending from the commercial centre to the First Intersection,” said Engineer Nabeel Mohammed Saleh, Director of the Roads Department at the authority’s Traffic and Roads Agency.

“The design concept is based on widening pavements in the immediate vicinity of towers with a view to creating a pedestrian zone with trees, patios and terraces with coffee shop and restaurants.

“The project also includes the introduction of water features, illumination, greenery, shaded sitting areas, jogging tracks and other elements to create a lively and appealing atmosphere.”

The highest standards were being applied to the development work and this in turn merited paying attention to the appearance of the emirate.

“The RTA’s plans to expand the greenery along Sheikh Zayed Road and other Dubai roads fits in with the continuing urban development,” added Saleh.

“This warrants creating a harmonious environment to meet future requirements and expectations.”
