Serb ambassador in Nigeria likens Kosovo PM to Bin Laden

Serbia's ambassador to Nigeria likened Tuesday Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci to Osama bin Laden as the diplomatic war of words over the province's declaration of independence intensified.

Dragan Mraovic's comments came in an open letter to This Day, a daily newspaper which had spoken out in favour of Kosovan independence.

"One can trust in [Hashim] Thaci, who is very well known for his numerous terrorist acts, for which he was prosecuted in Serbia and sentenced to jail... in the same way Osama bin Laden should be trusted," he wrote.

"Many brutalities have definitely happened in Kosovo, some are blamed on Serbian side, but the majority are done by Albanian terrorists who are waging armed rebellion for the secession of the Serbian state," the letter continued.

Fighting between the Serb forces and the Kosovo Liberation Army, of which Thaci was the head during the 1998-99 war, ultimately led to a NATO bombing campaign and Kosovo was put under UN administration.

Nigeria has yet to say whether it plans to recognise Kosovo's independence. (AFP)
