US-led coalition forces killed several Taliban fighters and detained eight others during two separate raids in southern Afghanistan, the coalition said in a statement.
The troops were targeting a Taliban commander in Garmser district of Helmand province Sunday, the statement said. "Several insurgents were killed when they fired on coalition forces," it said.
Four other men with suspected links to militants were also detained.
Also Sunday, troops detained another four suspected militants in Qalat district of Zabul province, the statement said. The men were accused of involvement in attacks along the main highway connecting Kabul to the country's south.
Last year was the deadliest in Afghanistan since the 2001 US-led invasion. More than 6,500 people - mostly militants - were killed in violence linked to the insurgency, according to an Associated Press count. (AP)
