Dubai residents woke up to a windy weekend on Friday with strong Shamal (northwesterly) winds blowing across the emirate, carrying dust and moving at a speed of 50 knots, the Dubai Meteorological Office reported.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said that the emirate can expect the winds to weaken by Sunday.

“The weather will continue to be partly cloudy and very hazy throughout the day on Friday until early Saturday morning. By Sunday, the winds will gradually weaken,” he said.

Heavy gusts have torn some advertisement billboards along the Sheikh Zayed Road, Emirates Business has observed.

The Shamal winds have also disturbed marine conditions with offshore waves anticipating to reach as high as 21 feet (6.4 metres).

“We have already sent out an adverse marine advisory, discouraging anyone to engage in outdoor water-related activities,” the forecaster said.

The temperature will remain low at a minimum of 15 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 19 degrees Celsius on Friday.
