Thousands of Palestinians flood into Egypt after border breached
Thousands of Palestinians poured out of Gaza and into Egypt early Wednesday after masked gunmen blew dozens of holes in the wall delineating the border, rushing to buy food, fuel and other supplies that have become scarce in Gaza because of an Israeli blockade.
Egyptian guards took no action as the Gazans crossed the border. Police from Gaza’s ruling Hamas group also stood by.
On Tuesday, after five days of a full blockade of Gaza’s border crossings, Israel transferred limited supplies, but Gazans are still facing critical shortages of electricity, fuel and other necessities.
Before dawn Wednesday, Palestinian gunmen began blowing holes in the border wall. Hamas security later closed all but two, but allowed free traffic through them. Gazans began crossing into Egypt to buy supplies, returning with milk, cigarettes and plastic bottles of fuel. (AP)
