Three suspects arrested for blackmail against Liechtenstein bank

By Agencies

German authorities have arrested three men suspected of involvement in blackmailing the Liechtensteinische Landesbank, a prosecutor said on Saturday.

The three men - aged 41, 43 and 50 - are suspected of having acted as accomplices to a key suspect in the case, a 48-year-old who allegedly received around EUR9 million (Dh48.5m) in exchange for returning to the bank stolen data about clients, said prosecutor Peter Lueckemann.

Liechtensteinische Landesbank, based in Vaduz, Liechtenstein, revealed on Monday that it was the victim of blackmail between 2003 and 2007 by a former staff member and an accomplice, who obtained internal data about German clients.

Both of those men remain in custody.

Lueckemann said the three new suspects all come from the area of the northern German cities of Luebeck and Kiel.

He stressed that the case was unrelated to a German probe into a tax evasion scandal that has toppled Deutsche Post chief Klaus Zumwinkel. (AP)
