Tibet capital calm a day after violent rioting: state media

By Agencies

The violence-wracked Tibetan capital of Lhasa was calm early Saturday morning, China's state-run Xinhua news agency said, after a police clampdown on riots.

"Lhasa city has reverted to calm in the wee hours on Saturday, after a violent day that saw windows smashed, shops robbed, and a mosque burnt down," the brief report said.

Deaths were reported in the biggest protests in two decades, which spread outside Tibet into other areas of China.

The unrest came amid a growing international campaign by Tibetans to challenge Beijing's rule of the Himalayan region ahead of the Olympic Games in August.

Several people lost their lives and many others were injured in Lhasa on Friday, an official at the city's medical emergency centre told AFP, with Radio Free Asia reporting at least two people had been killed by Chinese bullets. (AFP)
