His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, was awarded a gold medal of honour on Friday by the Free University of Berlin.
Sheikh Mohammed was welcomed to the university by its President Dr Dieter Lenzen and Gerhard Schroeder, former German Chancellor and Chairman of the German-Arab Friendship Society, together with members of the faculty.
The university awarded Sheikh Mohammed the medal in appreciation of his efforts and initiatives in the fields of knowledge, science, charity and humanitarian work in and outside the Middle East.
The citation said the award was given in recognition of Sheikh Mohammed’s work to encourage the building of an Arab and Islamic society based on knowledge that would remain true to its cultural heritage, values and local and social norms. The citation highlighted Sheikh Mohammed’s initiatives, saying they have proved that it is possible to integrate economic and social development with education and knowledge.
Sheikh Mohammed lead a delegation of 20 senior business leaders and officials to Berlin, following an invitation by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. (Wam)
