Nobody wants cheats to win

Published

When winning matters so much that the words “at any cost” come into play, collectively we need to stop and think.

The Netherlands yesterday managed not only to savagely attack the Spanish, but to make every lover of the football game uncomfortable. And by the first period of extra time, make even those neutrals who began the final siding with the Dutch, shift loyalties. Nobody wants cheats to win.

There was a bitter taste this morning – in headlines, and news reports and expert analysis across all media.

Did the Dutch intentionally assault the Spanish? Did the pressure of the ocassion get to them? Did they forget that winning at all costs can sometimes mean losing everything. Including the self-respect and pride of the nation you represent.

There was relief when Spain won. Global relief. Relief that in these times of moral obscurity at least on the football pitch the right thing happened – the team that played the better game won.

Thankfully, the team the played the better game also was the team that chose not to cheat, or react to cheats.

What will we remember the Dutch for? Arjen Robben’s diving. Mark van Bommel’s incessant fouling right through the tournament. Nigel De Jong, after kicking Xabi Alonso in the chest in an MMA-style attack, actually having a verbal dig at him (no, he wasn’t saying sorry).

Last night’s final was more than just about football. It was about the choices we make and the consequences of those choices.

Spain chose to play football, and to play it clean and fair. The consequence of that choice is:

* This Spanish team is the first to win the World Cup for their nation.

* Spain is the first team to lose their first game and still win the World Cup.

* Spain is the first European team to win the cup outside of Europe.

* Spain is the first team to win the World Cup scoring less than 10 goals in the entire tournament.

There are plenty of “only the second team” points as well. But, Spain deserve all the firsts. A consequence of their choice.

The consequence of Holland’s choice to play rough and not play football is disgrace. And shame. Forever etched in the annals of World Cup history.

Gather your kids around you. Play the tape again. Teach them the lesson.
