Bahrain scored in the last minute of stoppage time to beat Saudi Arabia on the away goals rule in their Asian World Cup playoff.

Bahrain advanced to a final qualifying play-off against Oceania champions New Zealand after substitute Ismael Abdullatif's last-gasp goal secured a 2-2 draw following their scoreless draw in Manama at the weekend.

"We were lucky to score in the last minute, but we really deserve to reach the World Cup finals," said Bahrain coach Milan Macala. "Now we will start thinking about preparing for our next game and I hope to see Bahrain in the World Cup finals."

Saudi Arabia, who were bidding for their fifth straight appearance in the World Cup finals, took an early lead when Nassir Al Shamrani scored in the 13th minute.

Bahrain equalised just before half-time through Nigerian-born striker Jaycee John.

The Saudis looked to have stolen the match when Hamad Al Montashari scored in the first minute of stoppage time only for their Gulf neighbours to find a second equaliser.

"We failed to make the most of scoring chances in the first half. We could have scored three goals at least," Saudi coach Jose Peseiro said. "I think we had a good performance during the first half. It was a balanced show and after the break I expected Bahrain would close up and become defensive.

"I always ask my players to slow down and not to hurry to score goals. They pressed forward, but I think we were not lucky."

Bahrain will play New Zealand over two legs in October and November with the winner qualifying for the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa.

Bahrain are bidding to qualify for the first time.

African qualifying round-up

Cameroon defeated Gabon 2-1 and completed a climb from the bottom to the top of Group A within five days.

Jean Makoun and Samuel Eto'o scored, before Daniel Cousin set up a tense finish with a last-minute goal.

Ghana became the first African nation to secure a World Cup place on Sunday, while Cameroon, Tunisia, Algeria and Ivory Coast are best placed to claim the other places.
