How to dress like a man

They say it's what separates the men from the boys. Double-breasted blazers, though in short supply in our part of the world, have always had an enduring charm and will never really go out of style.

But it's not just the popularity of the Johnny Depp and Christian Bale starrer Public Enemies that has stirred our fascination with this timeless style. The double-breasted is once again making appearances in the runway shows of top designers' Spring/Summer 2010 collections.

From Georgio Armani, Tommy Hilfiger, Tim Hamilton and French fashion house Lanvin, the classic, ready or not, is undergoing various transformations, trimmed down, with an interesting mix of styles and shades.

But it's not for everyone, warns our expert Simon Parton, who manages the Dubai branch of tailor Logsdail London.

"It's not a style that's worn a lot. Younger guys tend to like the slimmer look," says Parton. "But it will be in vogue again sooner or later."

For those brave enough to lead, here are Parton's top tips on how to get it right with the double-breasted blazer.


How to do the double-breasted by Simon Parton

- Double-breasted looks good on the slimmer guy. If you are tall and in proportion they will give you a dramatic look as long as you go for the slimmer shoulder and shaped waist. It's not really for the shorter or somewhat stout frame. 

- Stick to plain colours for a double-breasted blazer. And the classic understated navy blue is hard to beat. Avoid bold stripes in a suit unless you're tall and also have the personality to carry it off.

- For blazers add some detail – hand stitched lapels, maybe a ticket pocket – and always look for good quality buttons. The classic "military" style brass never fails but maybe consider a dark Mother Of Pearl. It's elegant and just a little different.

- Best style for double- breasted is to "button two show six". The front has six buttons and you can button two of them. However, when you wear it only ever button the top buttoning button.

- Always have side vents on a double breasted blazer, it gives the back of the jacket a lean and clean look.
