Now that's what I call home cinema! If you're locked in a war with your friends over who has the largest TV hanging on the wall then why not deliver the knockout blow with the Optoma HD65 digital projector?

The giant picture it provides dwarfs the image on even the biggest LCD or plasma. You get that authentic movie house dust-speckled beam of light and the unit is packed with features – all that's missing is a bucket of popcorn.

The HD65's size and retro looks are deceiving. It may appear simple and even a bit old-fashioned but it contains loads of high-tech.

The initial set-up is easy. Just connect it to a video source – a laptop, say, or a DVD player or set-top box – and switch it on. The projector automatically detects the device and, after asking you to set the language you want to use for the on-screen menus, displays the picture several metres wide across your wall or projector screen – awesome! Adjust the zoom and focus and you're done – your living room is transformed into the private cinema you've always dreamed of having.

The HD65 will also blow away the proud owners of the latest 12-inch digital photo frames – their holiday snaps are going to look pretty feeble after you display yours right across the wall. Just connect your laptop to the projector and run a slideshow of your pictures.

It also has loads of different inputs and comes with a number of cables – there's no need to go to the electronics store and shell out large amounts to get hooked up. In the box you'll find component,

S-Video and VGA cables and even a SCART adapter – very generous. There's an HDMI socket so you can link up a Blu-ray player or PlayStation 3, and the picture quality ranges from good to outstanding depending on which source and connection you use.

The on-screen menus, which you access using a remote control, let you fine-tune the picture to a remarkable degree. For example you can adjust the colour, tint and sharpness, set the picture format and even alter the degamma (no idea what that means but it sounds great).

The unit is versatile – you can mount it on the ceiling or use it to back-project onto a special translucent screen.

This Dh3,750 projector really is outstanding. Five stars? I reckon it deserves an Oscar.
