A deliciously addictive release

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs go back to disco. (SUPPLIED)

You know something is up from the opening bars of It's Blitz!, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' new CD.

The Brooklyn art-punk group is known for its guitars. Yet Zero, the first song on its new Interscope album, has a pulsating synthesiser like a trippy recording by Tangerine Dream or Vangelis. Welcome to 2009, let's make it sound like 1979.

Then frontwoman Karen O's voice kicks in. "Shake it like a ladder to the sun," she declares full of enthusiasm. "Makes me feel like a madman on the run. Find me never never far gone."

Erm, although I'm not really sure what all of that means, it's sung with enough conviction for meaning not to matter. The song explodes: "So get your leather, leather leather on on on on."

Heads Will Roll concludes with the repeated "Off, off, off with your head/ Dance, dance, dance till you're dead" It's nothing like the group's best-known hit, Maps – it's 1970s disco given a decidedly new-millennium twist.
