A mindless movie turn for Mattar

Lebanese singer Madeline Mattar makes her first foray into acting in Akher Kalam (The Final Word). Her first feature film is courtesy of El Sobky Production – a great move considering El Sobky is now one of the richest film companies in Egypt.

Starring alongside Hassan Hosney and child star Mena, Mattar plays Egyptian girl Amira, who dreams of making it as a famous singer. But her father (Hosney) is less than impressed and forbids her from pursuing her dreams – believing she should go to college instead.

Weeks pass and she goes ahead anyway without telling him. It is only when her father falls ill – and watches her on television – that he realises his daughter is really talented.

Obviously along the way, there are plenty of other random storylines to add comedy value as well as more minutes to the film's running time.

Okay, so Akher Kalam isn't the most inventive of Egyptian movies, and it's hardly Oscar-winning stuff, but if you fancy a laugh this weekend, then you'll enjoy this 90 minutes of stupid, yet funny gags. Just leave your brain at the door.
