Dubai Customs and a number of other government organisations launched a clean-up of the waters of Al Mamzar Beach last week.
The campaign involved 64 volunteers and was held in concert with World Environment Day activities, according to a statement issued yesterday. It was part of the body's CSR activities.
Since the early hours in the morning, volunteers dived into the bottom of the sea off the popular leisure area, searching for debris and pollutants of different kinds, the statement said. Among the items recovered were a large amount of metal cans, pieces of iron and plastic and other rubish.
Dubai Municipality provided a boat for carrying refuse to be disposed of at dumping grounds around the city.
Volunteers taking part also came from organisations such as Dubai Police, Coast Guards, Dubai Municipality and the Emirates Diving Association.
