What does Ramadan mean for charities such as yours in terms of funding?
Ramadan is a time of giving and most Muslims give donations and Zakat during this holy month. I believe that more than 50 per cent of the annual income for charities comes during Ramadan. Life and other charities work actively on Ramadan projects such as Iftar Essaem (breaking of fast), Al Zaka and clothing drives for orphans.
What percentage of a donation goes into relief activities and what are the administrative costs?
Our fees are limited to eight to 10 per cent of the annual donation, while the remainder goes directly to people. As part of our transparency policy, Life issues an annual report listing donations and expenses.
What are the qualities individuals should look at while donating large sums of money to an organisation?
Ensure the organisation is legally entitled to collect and disburse funds in designated countries. Also check the following: How long has the charity been active; the number of employees/volunteers; the number of projects they have; do they have a regularly updated website reflecting their activities.
How do you personally donate? After six years in the field, the best donation given is time. I also set aside a monthly percentage for charity.
How do you overcome charity fatigue, especially at times like Ramadan? There comes a time during Ramadan that I feel it's too much. But we plan ahead.
How do you relax? I spend my time divided between my family and reading. I enjoy reading, researching on the internet in areas that'll help me in my field.
What's your favourite restaurant in Dubai? I'm a traditional man, and the best food is cooked at home.
