Fee hike 'not approved' for GEMS-run schools

Dubai's Knowledge and Human Development Authority asks parents not to pay a higher fee unless the school produces a written approval from the emirate’s education authority for the same.

All schools have to get the restructuring of fees approved by the KHDA, reports Khaleej Times.

“No increase in school fees is effective and payable unless the school receives written approval from the KHDA,” Mohammed Darwish, Chief of Regulations and Compliance Commission (RCC) at the KHDA told the daily.

On May 12, GEMS, which runs a chain of educational institutions in the country, sent out circulars to parents of students in five of its Asian schools in Dubai, informing them of a 10 to 15 per cent fee hike payable effective May 1 for the 2010-2011 academic year.

GEMS stated it had received an approval for a fee hike from the Ministry of Education (MoE).

However, KHDA reiterated on Monday that Taaleem is the only education provider in Dubai that was granted permission by the MoE for a fee restructuring for two of its schools as per an exemption clause in the decree governing fee increases.

“No other hike in school fees has been approved,” Darwish was quoted by the paper.
