Starbucks to open shop in Dubai primary school

Dubai's GEMS Jumeirah Primary School (JPS) has struck a deal with Starbucks, the US-based coffee giant to open an outlet inside the school premises.

The move has sparked a debate among parents who are concerned about the security, health and ethical implications of this move, reports The National. While some parents are relieved that they will have a comfortable place to wait for their children, other parents are worried about how staff will control access to the shop during busy times.

A lot of parents cannot understand why the school could not open a cafeteria or a community room where parents can meet, have coffee and a chat. "What is the need for a global coffee chain to set up shop inside the school premises?" asked a JPS parent.

The school’s administration told the paper the shop is a trial aimed at gauging the response from parents. It is to be used only by parents and staff, with a separate entrance and security in place.

Starbucks has agreed to edit the menu amid concerns about the health implications of selling coffee, sugary drinks and snacks. The coffee giant will ensure only healthier options are available in the school's outlet. No muffins or doughnuts will be allowed and children will be granted access to the coffee shop only when accompanied by an adult, said the paper.

The issue of advertising and branding in schools is a global one, said the paper. In the UK, companies spend an estimated Dh1.62billion targeting classrooms, according to the National Union of Teachers.

Dubai's Knowledge and Human Development Authority has been quoted by the paper as saying that JPS' decision to partner with Starbucks “is an internal matter within the school”.
