Iman Muhammad was pleasantly surprised when she received a call informing her that she won one-kilo gold at the Dubai Shopping Festival.

“I was shocked, and couldn’t stop laughing,” she told Emirates24|7 on the telephone.

Iman, a homemaker, had purchased jewellery worth Dh11,000 from Malabar Gold. “When I first bought the gold, I got the coupons, but I didn’t put them in the box. The next day, I went back to the store to exchange my purchase. It’s then that I put the coupons in.”

She says that she’s used to winning, and has a lucky streak in her, but this is the first time she has won big.

“I have shared the news with my husband and mother, and I plan to save the prize.”

Indian Shikku Philip also won a kilo of gold on January 7 after he purchased diamonds for his wife.

“I’m in India now, and celebrating the good news with my family,” he told Emirates24|7, adding that he got the call from the organisers just minutes before he boarded the flight home.

“I had bought the diamonds for my wife, and she is my lucky charm. Even this will be for her.”

Another Indian, Binoy Varghese won 1-carat solitaire diamond on the same day.

“I thought someone was playing a prank. These days radio stations play such pranks, so I wasn’t entirely sure. Even the call came late in the night, so I wasn’t sure,” he said.

Binoy had bought jewellery from Malabar Gold in Ras Al Khamiah. “I had gone to buy gold bangles for me and my son, but when I reached the shop they were about to pull the shutters. But, since they know me, they let me in and shop. And, proved lucky.”

During DSF, for every Dh500 spent on gold or diamond purchase, customers get a coupon that enters them into a daily draw for 1-kilo gold or 1-carat solitaire diamond.
