In the cutthroat world of Bollywood, only the newsmakers survive the bright lights while the has-beens fade into the crumbling wallpaper, only to face the cameras again if they are lucky enough to bag a TV show or an infomerical.
Needless to say, in this fickle world, five minutes of fame are easily stretched to 15, when gimmicks and cheap stunts come into play. But A-list actors are usually exempt from this rule. Until now that is.
The latest star to bear the brunt of such an accusation is none other than the beautiful Bengali bombshell Bipasha Basu on her birthday, who even started her celebrations in Dubai last week when she was in the city to promote her film ‘Players,’ and saw the media contingent sing for her.
The premise is a leaked video of her ‘very private’ birthday bash on January 7, which shows the actress celebrating her big night with close family and fellow celebrity male friends, including Abhay Deol, Milind Soman, Sikander Kher and Aftab Shivdasani.
Barring, Deol, we probably reckon that none of the other male actors can even recall their last hit film, but who’s counting anyways.
The video has been uploaded by a Bollywood news entertainment portal.
Basu was so incensed by the video ‘leak’ that she took to microblogging site Twitter last evening, saying: “I’m still in shock that my privacy has been invaded. These were private moments from my birthday that were leaked and am very upset [sic]!”
She added: “Just because we are actors doesn’t mean we aren’t entitled to our privacy! These troublemakers should just get more productive with their time!”
The leaked video in question, which has wound its way onto YouTube, appears to be a slick edited montage of moments of Basu’s birthday bash, which shows the 33-year-old tottering on her heels as she danced the night away with close pals.
Further scenes show her cutting a cake, adorned with a hot red car – which we assume is a play on ‘Players’ – with a miniature version of the actress herself dressed in sultry shorts and holding a sign that is too hazy to read.
The camera also follows Basu and her friends into the bathroom where the girls continue to dance and holler away, albeit in a more bedraggled state.
However, the camerawork and the sequences are so well edited that many on YouTube have commented that this is certainly the work of a professional and that Basu herself leaked this video online.
Srinu5069 commented: “A clever and well-known marketing technique in the West, now started in India as well.
“Nicely edited, Bipasha. Sorry to say that you are at the fag end of your ‘film’ career. These intentional leakages can’t help it anyway. Better luck next time....”
Another viewer, Thinkpad50, added: “It looks like the video was made by a known person with a video camera because people are posing in front of camera. So if she wants privacy then why did she allow a cameraman there?”
Shivam Chanana also took to YouTube to say: “This video and her accompanying tweets about privacy and putting the word ‘uncensored’ in the title [of the video]. Yes Bipasha, we are all dumb creatures [sic].”
Perhaps the most cutting of comments came from someone called Slimming Girl, who said: “This whole thing looks pre-planned. It is well edited like a reality show trailer or something.
“The public relations is getting clever now but you can’t fool us.
“It is also a nice way to promote the “Jodi Breakers” (Basu’s upcoming film) song as well.”
While the truth is relative in this case, we will now just have to wait to see what is Basu’s rebuttal, if any, on Twitter.
