Griffin O'Neal, the elder son of US actor Ryan O'Neal, has been sentenced to 16 months in prison for causing a car accident while driving under the influence of drugs.
The driver of the other vehicle involved in the accident, which occurred last August, was seriously injured.
O'Neal, who was on parole at that time following another incident of driving under the influence of drugs, was arrested a month later.
A test revealed that O'Neal had traces of five different types of drugs in his bloodstream, including cocaine and marijuana, at the time of the accident.
His lawyer, Heather Boxeth, admitted Friday that her client's behavior was "inexcusable," but added that he had serious drug problems that needed to be addressed.
