Dubai’s theatre community ‘Theatrics’ is all set to showcase their new production ‘Dangerous Corner’ this weekend at the Junction.

Talking to Emirates24|7, director Kailash Nair says the story about “relationships and dark secrets” will set up a “good show”.

“It’s one of the few productions during the summer.”

The play, written by JB Priestly, is set in the 1930s, and the director has chosen not to alter the time period or update it. “When you watch the play you would know that it’s still very relevant today.”

The cast of six Indian nationals and one Canadian Arab were shortlisted through auditions. “They weren’t part of Theatrics when we auditioned, but now they are.”

Nair, who is a banker in Dubai, has been part of Theatrics for the last four years. “I’ve always been part of theatre back home in India, and Theatrics is just an extension of that.”

Theatre in Dubai, he believes, is slowly becoming more accessible. “What with new affordable venues like ‘The Junction’ cropping up. Earlier, we only had DUTAC or Madinat Theatre, but slowly there are newer options.”

For community groups like his, this means good news. Also, the introduction of play fests like ‘Short and Sweet’ has helped create a platform for them.

Synopsis: Robert and Freda Caplan are entertaining guests at their country retreat. A chance remark by one of the guests ignites a series of devastating revelations, revealing a hitherto undiscovered tangle of clandestine relationships and dark secrets, the disclosures of which have tragic consequences.
